Natural Reserves
The "Lys meadows», which flood with the first rains, have always been a most favourable shelter for the birds. In the course of years, this biotope was extended with old clay quarries of Warneton and Ploegsteert where several brick-making plants extract the earth from 5 to 7 meter deep quarries. After the exploitation, most of these are managed under the form of natural reserves covering presently over 200 hectares of ponds and reed beds, such as the "Reserve of Rabecques". The reserves house about 175 species, among which numerous ducks, shelducks, kingfishers, little grebes and great crested grebes, ... Owing to this amazing ornithological wealth, this reserve easily competes with well-known reserves such as the Blanckaert in Diksmuide, the Virelles ponds or the Harchies marshes. ![]() Free visit on the first Sunday of each month from 9.30 a.m. to +/- 12 a.m. Meeting point: ‘Parking des Pêcheurs’ next to the canteen of the Cératec plant, rue du Touquet, 7784 Warneton 21, chemin du Moulin Soete, 7780 Comines E-mail: office.tourisme.comines-warneton@belgacom.net
