The Soete Windmill
There has been a windmill in Comines Ten-Brielen for a long time.
The windmill was run by the family Soete for several generations and its history is marked by numerous events.
It was for instance one of the last post mills of the province of Hainaut, was completely made of wood and consisted of three storeys.
The windmill was listed in 1978.
An identical copy of our famous windmill, burnt down in May 1997, was built on the place of the original mill.
It can be visited during each 1st weekend of the month of May until late September: you can watch it grind cereals, crush oats and dress the grind to produce white flour.

M. De Campenaere, its present miller and windmill specialist will be pleased to welcome the visitors. But it needs about one hour prior maintenance to grease the articulations, perform the verifications and prepare the machine. Period: from May 1 to September 30:
On Sunday and public holidays from 9 a.m. to 12 a.m. and from 3.00 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Visits every hour ( 9 a.m. - 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. - 4 p.m. - 5 p.m. - 6 p.m.)

Outside this period (not recommended), make an appointment with the Tourism Office, to agree about the date, hour and rate of the visit.
Rate : adults 2.50 €; -12 year 1.25 €; group +10 2 € / person; Schools < 12 year : 1€, >12 year : 1.5€ + 20€ per guide.
Schools with educational coordinator: 5€ per pupil on the basis of minimum 20 pupils.

For safety’s sake, the school leaders are requested to appoint one supervisor per 10 pupils and to take account of it that only 10 pupils can get access at the same time to the windmill. In such case, the visits are limited to 30 min. per group.
At the foot of the windmill, a vast parking lot is available for the coaches, cars, motorbikes and bicycles. You will as a consequence have the opportunity to visit this wooden giant undisturbed.
Please note that in case of bad weather, the visits will be cancelled for safety’s sake.
